Middle College

Midlands Education and Business Alliance is the coordinating organization for a Middle College High School -- a unique, three-county initiative to be implemented at Midlands Technical College's Airport Campus. The multidistrict Middle College will help students who are identified by school officials as probable dropouts, but who have academic promise.

Middle Colleges are high school programs housed at institutions of higher learning and are established to help at-risk students who have potential for eventual college studies. A Middle College High School would reduce the high school dropout rate, create a seamless transition to college programs, afford students real-world work experiences and encourage collaboration between K-12 and higher education.

Students who are academically capable, but at risk of dropping out of high school would be the target population for the Middle College in hopes of encouraging the student to graduate from high school. The Middle College model has been proven to work and the graduation rate of the 30 Middle Colleges in the United States is 75%. The multidistrict concept is unique as there are only two other known models in the nation that incorporate multiple districts.

Students will be drawn from nine school districts: Fairfield, Lexington One, Lexington Two, Lexington Three, Lexington Four, Lexington-Richland Five, Richland One, Richland Two and the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The Middle College task force, which has been working for several years, plans to hire a director for the Middle College by the end of 2005 and enroll students in Fall 2006. The multidistrict Middle College has received the Tech Prep Demonstration Grant from the U.S. Department of Education for $410,540. These funds will be added to a $100,000 challenge grant from the Nord Family Foundation, $50,000 from Time Warner, $7000 from Women in Philanthropy and $25,000 from the State Department of Education.  A special thank you to the Central Carolina Community Foundation for their support of the initiative.
