Entrepreneurship Workshop
More than 34 educators representing 27 schools or districts attended MEBA's Entrepreneurship Workshop and Field Study to learn more about one of the fastest growing areas of today's job market and a strong contributor to economic growth -- entrepreneurship. Held on November 2, the event featured speakers from varying perspectives and provided a first-hand look at some Midlands entrepreneurship success stories.

Tech Night
Nearly 50 Midlands high school students got a closer look at Information Technology (IT) as a career through an interactive, challenging and fun evening of activities. Held on September 27 at Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company, Unum’s Tech Night helped generate awareness and interest in the field of IT to help meet current and future workforce demands. MEBA and IT-oLogy helped organize and facilitate the event.

ProStart's Famously Hot Chef Showdown
Students from Blythewood High School and Heyward Career and Technology Center were selected as the top six ProStart students winners for the SC State Fair 2011 Famously Hot Chef Showdown. Dakota Jones, Kelly Lynch, Megan Taylor, Chris Reynolds, Tiquasia Scholfield and Braxton Downey all participated in an “Iron Chef” style competition at the SC State Fair where they served as chef assistants to each of the three participating restaurant culinary teams.

Printing Industry Field Study
MEBA and Constantia Hueck Foils hosted a “mini” Printing Industry Field Study for 20 Midlands educators on April 28, 2011. The event took place at Constantia Hueck Foils Blythewood facility where educators toured the facility and learned about industry growth and career opportunities. Participants also learned about Project C.L.A.S.S. (Careers & Learning for Advanced Skill Seekers), a combination of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction where “student” employees learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Project C.L.A.S.S. is solely sponsored by Constantia Hueck Foils.

Shaw Serves as Principal for a Day
On April 21, 2011, Dr. Kaye Shaw of the Midlands REC and MEBA joined Columbia’s business and community leaders as a participant in the Richland School District One’s Principal for a Day event. Several MEBA board members also participated in the annual event including Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin; Ike McLeese, CEO and President of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce; and Dr. Jasper Salmond, a recently retired member of Richland School District One’s Board of Trustees.

IT-oLogy Named Business Partner of the Year
The Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce and Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA) hosted the annual Teacher Recognition Breakfast on March 11, 2011, at The Zone at Williams-Brice Stadium. All Midlands Teachers of the Year from Richland, Lexington, Newberry, Fairfield and Kershaw Counties were honored at the event.

Approximately 40 Midlands educators participated in an Architecture & Construction Educator Field Study, hosted by the Architecture & Construction Alliance of the Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA). Held in conjunction with the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia's 45th Annual Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show, the field study took place on March 11, 2011 at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds. MEBA Hosts Hospitality & Tourism Field Study
More than 35 Midlands educators recently participated in a Hospitality & Tourism Educator Field Study hosted by the Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA). Held on March 9, 2011, the day began at the Holiday Inn & Suites Hotel with a welcome and industry overview by Douglas O'Flaherty and Xavier Meier with the South Carolina Hospitality Association. On March 2, 2011, twenty-five Midlands educators took part in MEBA’s Information Technology Educator Field Study. The event was held at IT-oLogy, an organization focused on advancing the study of Information Technology (IT), and provided information about relative careers, education and training needs, and the industry’s strong future and potential for growth.

Poetry and Poster Contest Winners
Four Midlands students have been named as state winners in the 2010 National Career Development Association (NCDA) Poetry and Poster Contest. The contest is held annually in celebration of National Career Development Month. The state winners will advance to the national finals, and national winners will be announced in April 2011. The competition is based on six divisions – primary, intermediate, middle, senior, adult student and open adult. Each student’s work aims to celebrate and inspire career development with a positive tone.

National Groundhog Job Shadow Day
Each February, students across the country participate in National Groundhog Job Shadow Day, a national campaign that gives young people a new perspective on their studies through hands-on learning and a one-day mentoring experience.

MEBA Receives Donation from SCANA
Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA) is pleased to announce a donation of $5000 from SCANA Community Affairs. The donation, made in 2010, is in support of MEBA’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program and will be used to update and publish a new “Be A Part of Series” STEM and Emerging Careers brochure. The brochure highlights industry careers, education and training requirements and job market statistics and serves as a resource for students, parents, educators and adult learners as they prepare for the world of work.

Midlands Middle College Provides New Chance for Success
After transferring from a small private school in the ninth grade, Amber Shull was overwhelmed by the number of students at her new school and struggled to find her place. Always a good student, Amber fell in with a crowd where academic achievement was not valued and where at least half had dropped out or were planning to drop out as soon as they were old enough. Even with the constant discipline and involvement of her concerned parents, Amber felt lost and swallowed up in the traditional high school setting.

MEBA Partners with USC to Host Geography Educator Field Study
Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA) partnered with the University of South Carolina to host a Geography Educator Field Study on December 15, 2010. Midlands career specialists, guidance professionals and educators attended the event, which was held at the University of South Carolina’s main campus in Columbia. Dr. Jerry Mitchell, director of the SC Geography Alliance, helped coordinate the event and served as a presenter. Attendees learned how geography fits into the 16 career clusters through speaker presentations and demonstrations.

Donor Spotlight: Bank of America
Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA) is pleased to announce a $10,000 donation from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to help support A Framework for Understanding Poverty training for educators throughout the Midlands. Based on the national model by Ruby K. Payne, the training provides tips, strategies and resources for working with children and parents of poverty.
