MEBA Puts Teachers to Work

MEBA’s Teachers in the Workplace

With school out for the year, Midlands educators left the classroom to take on new and exciting summer jobs. From road construction sites to employee recruiting offices, these brave and energetic educators are working to make learning more meaningful and relevant for their students.

The experience is all part of MEBA’s annual Teachers in the Workplace program where Midlands educators spend 40 hours in a challenging position with a local business or industry to gain an in-depth and involved look at the workplace. Held May 26 through June 13, 2011, participants learn about the skills, both hard and soft, students need to be successful in a particular field. The educators are then able to share their gained experience and knowledge with students, helping to provide a more seamless connection between school and work.

Benie Brunson, a school counselor at Lexington High School in Lexington School District One, went to work with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. According to Brunson, the course provided a “very valuable experience,” helping her learn about various careers, skill requirements and giving her great insight into the world of work.

Clarice Richards, a special needs liaison at Lexington Technology Center in Lexington School District One, spent time working at Recruiting Solutions in downtown Columbia. Recruiting Solutions specializes in temp-to-hire and direct hire placements in the hospitality, health care, sales and administrative fields, providing comprehensive workforce and employment solutions, including recruitment, retention and management services. “Through MEBA’s course and time spent with Recruiting Solutions, I learned there are many more jobs and careers available than I ever realized before,” said Richards.
