Midlands Middle College Provides New Chance for Success
Jan 31, 2011
After transferring from a small private school in the ninth grade, Amber Shull was overwhelmed by the number of students at her new school and struggled to find her place. Always a good student, Amber fell in with a crowd where academic achievement was not valued and where at least half had dropped out or were planning to drop out as soon as they were old enough. Even with the constant discipline and involvement of her concerned parents, Amber felt lost and swallowed up in the traditional high school setting.
Amber would often skip school because she believed no one noticed or cared whether or not she was there. Still, Amber cared. Her truancy was affecting her grades, straining her relationship with her family and shaking her confidence and self-esteem.
One day, ironically while skipping school, a friend told Amber about Midlands Middle College. Something clicked inside for Amber, and she went online and applied to the College that very day. A tour of the school confirmed her feelings, and she immediately felt this was where she needed to be.
“Everyone was so nice and inviting,” explains Amber. “I felt right away like someone cared about me and my future. I knew this was my second chance and that I would not lose my way this time.”
Amber credits the Midlands Middle College’s small classes and the teachers who make learning fun and meaningful with redirecting her life. Amber is currently a senior with an A average. Following graduation, she plans to study graphic design and attend cosmetology school.
Midlands Middle College is located on the Airport Campus of Midlands Technical College and serves juniors and seniors from high schools in Fairfield, Lexington and Richland Counties. For more information about Midlands Middle College, please visit www.midlandsmiddlecollege.com.
