Midlands Education and Business Alliance Receives More Than $90,000 in Funding
October 27, 2006
The Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA) has received more than $90,000 from several local industry leaders. Donations include $50,000 from Palmetto Health; $25,000 from Lexington Medical Center; $10,000 from Bank of America; and $6,800 from the Columbia/Lexington New Car Dealers Association. These funds will help support MEBA’s mission to connect students, parents, educators and employers to education and career opportunities in the Midlands through programs such as Your Child Is Job #1, Teachers in the Workplace and A Framework for Understanding Poverty training.
Industry leaders view their support of MEBA as a way to strengthen the Midlands workforce and its economy. “MEBA is the only consortium in the Midlands that brings the power of education and business leaders together to effect change in the quality of life we enjoy,” said Trip Gregory, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Palmetto Health. “It is also the best vehicle to improve that quality of life.”
Kama Staton, Workforce Development Coordinator for Lexington Medical Center, agrees. “Opportunities for rewarding careers exist for young people who are prepared to enter a demanding workforce that is responsive to the needs of a dynamic economy,” explained Staton. “MEBA recognizes this importance. By partnering with MEBA, Lexington Medical Center has reached thousands of students by creating work-based learning opportunities in order to build the pipeline for future healthcare professionals.”
“We are so grateful to the commitment these industries have shown to MEBA and for their recent generosity,” said Dr. Kaye Shaw, MEBA’s Executive Director. “With their support we can continue to make significant strides in making sure education and business work together to produce a qualified and productive workforce for a vibrant economy.”
