MEBA's Midlands Middle College to Host Ribbon Cutting to Celebrate Successful Start of the School Year

What: Midlands Middle College has opened its doors for a third successful year. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on September 16, 2008, will celebrate last year’s achievements and look forward to another promising class of future graduates.

Featured speakers include:
Dr. Marshall “Sonny” White, President, Midlands Technical College
Dr. Karen Woodward, Superintendent, Lexington School District One
Mrs. Sandy Roberts, parent of a returning student
Kimberly Letton, Student (Home School: Airport High School)
Matthew Newton, Student (Home School: Lexington High School)
Dr. John Hudgens, Field Representative, Midlands Middle College

Midlands Middle College is a unique, three-county initiative established to help students who are academically capable, but at-risk of dropping out of high school. Coordinated by the Midlands Education and Business Alliance (MEBA) and located on the Airport Campus of Midlands Technical College, Midlands Middle College works with school districts to provide students with another option for academic excellence and encouragement to graduate from high school. Midlands Middle College works to reduce the high school dropout rate in the Midlands, create a seamless transition to college programs, afford students real-world experiences and encourage collaboration between K-12 and higher education.

Last year, 33 seniors graduated from Midlands Middle College, with 22 enrolling in at least one Midlands Tech class. Seven students were named Life Scholars and four were named Hope Scholars. This year, 105 students from seven of the eight districts served are enrolled in Midlands Middle College.

Event begins at front entrance of Congaree Hall followed by speaker presentations in the Mary Robertson Conference Room, Academic Center
