Shaw Serves as Principal for a Day
Apr 21, 2011
On April 21, 2011, Dr. Kaye Shaw of the Midlands REC and MEBA joined Columbia’s business and community leaders as a participant in the Richland School District One’s Principal for a Day event. Several MEBA board members also participated in the annual event including Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin; Ike McLeese, CEO and President of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce; and Dr. Jasper Salmond, a recently retired member of Richland School District One’s Board of Trustees.
The day began at 7:30 a.m. with Sherry Rivers, Principal of Heyward Career and Technology Center, welcoming students who come in from seven of Richland School District One’s high schools to take courses at the center. Heyward offers programs in the areas of business management and information systems; engineering, manufacturing and industrial technologies; health sciences and human services; and Richland One Works School-Based Enterprises. The center has been designated as one of South Carolina’s “Technology Centers That Work” sites and is also home to the Excel Academy.
“The day was special from the moment I drove into my designated parking place marked with purple and white balloons and my name on the school marquee,” said Shaw. “I enjoyed a wonderful lunch from Chef Collier and his culinary arts students and then visited with students in their classrooms. Throughout the day, I saw students engaged in their learning and excited about how they were connecting these skills to their future careers. Sherry Rivers does an excellent job as the ‘real’ principal and it is evident that she is respected by her faculty, staff and students.”
