Technology Champions to be Honored

Morgan Cox of Airport High School Selected as 2011 Technology Champion

South Carolina’s top career and technology education students will be publically recognized during the opening session of the Education and Business Summit on June 26 in Greenville. These students have been designated as “Technology Champions,” a distinction bestowed upon only 12 very select 2011 Palmetto State high school graduates. Among them will be Morgan Cox of Airport High School, the 2011 Technology Champion from the Midlands.

Dr. Bob Couch, Director of the Office of Career and Technology Education, proclaimed, “The South Carolina Department of Education is proud to salute the Technology Champion students who are among the best and brightest Career and Technology students in our state.”

Each Champion was selected from a pool of nominations received from high schools and career and technology centers in each of the State’s twelve EEDA regions.  Regional selection was based upon standardized factors including GPA, attendance, awards and honors, leadership in school, and service to the community.  To qualify for this honor each nominee had to be a graduating senior in a career and technology education completer program.

This year’s showcase of Technology Champions includes two valedictorians and other students who are in the top percentage of their graduating classes.  Many of the Technology Champions are student government leaders and young people who have provided leadership in student organizations, their churches, and in their communities.  Underlying all of the other exemplary qualities is the fact that the 2011 Technology Champions are regional, state, and national award winners in a variety of occupational skill areas such as carpentry, automotive technology, culinary arts, graphic communications, pre-engineering, and health science technology.

The Technology Champions recognition is made possible through a partnership among the State Department of Education Office of Career and Technology Education, South Carolina Army National Guard, South Carolina Association for Career and Technology Education, and South Carolina’s Regional Career Specialists.
