Study Skills

Study skills are a valuable resource for your child and important to insuring academic success. Each child should have a homework routine to follow daily. When it is time to study your child should be organized, informed and ready to start work. The following is a list of guidelines to help your child improve study habits.

Study Location

Students should have a specific location where homework is completed. The area should be clean, well lighted, quiet and comfortable. The desk or table should have nothing on it except what is needed for the assignment. Your child should be encouraged to gather all learning tools together before starting.

Assignment Notebook

Your child should have an assignment notebooks where he or she records all assignments immediately during the school day. You should encourage your child to listen to what the teacher says and know exactly what they are supposed to do.

Plan

Your child should plan what he or she wants to accomplish during the homework time and make a list. Large tasks should be broken down into smaller, manageable tasks.

Books and Supplies

Your child should gather all necessary text books, reference books and supplies prior to starting the homework session. It may be helpful to your child if you collect all necessary supplies (pencils, pens, markers, erasers, white-out, ruler, stapler, pencil sharpener, post it notes, scissors, calculator, paper, etc.) in a shoebox to have handy.

Clock

Keep a clock close by to help your child manage their time.

Eliminate all Distractions

Turn off TV, radio, video games or anything else that may be distracting to your child. Classical music played softly in the background may be helpful. Encourage your child not to daydream during his or her studies.

Health

Take care of the health of your child! If your child is supposed to wear glasses, have them do so during homework. Set a reasonable bedtime for your child. Be sure your child eats healthy and be sure they get a good breakfast each morning.
