Holiday Hints
The Holiday Season can provide great teachable moments for our children. Amidst the hustle and bustle that often comes with the season, take time to slow down, spend time with family and friends and enjoy cherished traditions. Below are some “Holiday Hints” to help you give your child the gift of your time and your example.
- Remember that the greatest holiday memories are about sharing time with loved ones, not receiving expensive gifts.
- Take time for yourself and get plenty of rest. If you are exhausted, you might turn into the Grinch.
- Share the experience of holiday season with your children. Let older children shop, decorate and babysit. Cook with younger children and let them set the table.
- The Holidays are a gift to our senses. Listen to the sounds of the season, enjoy watching holiday movies with loved ones, and bake delicious cookies with your children.
- Remember you cannot be all things to all people. Learn to say “no” with your time and your spending.
- Teach your children that even Santa has a budget, and that the greatest gifts are often free.
- Be safe. Be aware of your surroundings. Protect your identity. Do not put packages of gifts on the curb advertising presents you have received.
- Teach your children the spirit of community. Allow your family the joy of helping others who may not be as fortunate. Modeling the behavior of a charitable heart teaches your children that it truly is more blessed to give than to receive.
