Parenting Tips for the New Year

At the beginning of each new year, many of us resolve to break a bad habit and start a new beneficial one. After you have committed to become more fit, get out of debt and be more organized, take time to look at your family relationships. Kay Barlow, MEBA’s Community and Parent Education Director, offers the following suggestions to help make this year a great one for you and your family.

  • Feel good. Commit to the well being of yourself and your family. This includes healthier eating, exercising more and getting adequate sleep.
  • Be positive. Have a better attitude about life. You are your child’s #1 teacher and his or her role model. A positive attitude can change your child’s life.
  • Give encouragement. Be an encourager, especially an “education encourager.” Teach your child the importance of an education and the influence that a good education will have on his or her future.
  • Offer praise. Tell each family member on a regular basis how valuable they are to you. Let them know that being their parent is your pleasure.
  • Show appreciation. The entire family will benefit from an attitude of appreciation. Have a grateful heart and show appreciation for the family, your friends, your community and your country.
