Study Skills

Study skills are a valuable resource to insure academic success. A homework routine should be followed daily. When it is time to study you should be organized, informed and ready to start work. The following is a list of guidelines to help you improve study habits.

Study Location

Students should have a specific location where homework is completed. The area should be clean, well lighted, quiet and comfortable. The desk or table should have nothing on it except what is needed for the assignment. You should gather all your learning tools together before you start.

Assignment Notebook

You should have an assignment notebook where you record all assignments immediately during the school day. You should listen to what the teacher says and know exactly what you are supposed to do.

Plan

You should plan what you want to accomplish during the homework time and make a list. Large tasks should be broken down into smaller, manageable tasks.

Books and Supplies

You should gather all necessary text books, reference books and supplies prior to starting the homework session. It may be helpful if you collect all necessary supplies (pencils, pens, markers, erasers, ruler, stapler, pencil sharpener, post it notes, scissors, calculator, paper, etc.) in a shoebox to have handy.

Clock

Keep a clock close by to help you manage your time.

Eliminate all Distractions

Turn off TV, radio, video games or anything else that may be distracting to you. Classical music played softly in the background may be helpful. Do not daydream during your studies.

Health

Take care of your health! If you are supposed to wear glasses, do so during homework. Be sure to get plenty of rest, eat healthy and eat a good breakfast each morning.
